The Greatest Tale Ever Told
- Lion’s Den: the great ancestral stronghold of House Lionheart.
- Defence Against Assault:
As the walls of the fortress are built into the top of a rocky cliff and the back of the castle is guarded by the sheer side of a mountain, the only practicable access to Lion’s Den is over a stone causeway that crosses Pine River. This Causway leads to a tunnel the burrows upwards through the mountain and eventually emerges inside the fortress. The causeway is guarded by a stone gatehouse and the tunnel by numerous murder-holes through which archers can fire and heavy objects can be dropped onto an attacking force. As a result of these obstacles and whatever other plans the defenders can concoct, Lion’s Den has been described as nigh impregnable by assault.
- Resilience Against Siege:
Underneath Lion’s Den, in the rocky outcropping over which it presides, massive storehouses and granaries have been hollowed out. These hold everything necessary to withstand a prolonged siege, including meat, grain, and bread. There are a great many wells that access ground water deep beneath the surface, providing a fresh and uncontaminated source of fresh water for the defenders. Any siege of Lion’s Den should be expected to last at least a year.
Lion’s Den is defended by one thousand veteran soldiers under the command of Master-at-Arms Sir Brendan Tucker.
The Household is managed by Lady Enna Lionheart with the assistance of steward and teacher Master Ivan.
Lion’s Den is home to the principal family of House Lionheart: Lord Saul, Lady Enna, Sir Nathaniel, and Lady Aliena.
